Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a lifelong condition in which an abnormal response of the body’s immune system affects the central ner- vous system. This comprises the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Damage by MS on the central nervous system can cause vari- ous symptoms including:

  • Vision problems
  • Moving limbs difficulty
  • Sensation deficit
  • Balance problems

Although the cause of this condition is still unknown, scientists believe it’s triggered by a combination of factors such as genetics and environmental factors.

Unfortunately, a cure doesn’t exist yet for multiple sclerosis (MS). Current treatment protocols aim to alleviate the symptoms of MS, but don’t actually address the underlying issues. Worse, the drugs prescribed for MS symptoms often come with adverse side effects while being unable to slow down disease progression in many patients. Lastly, the prices of these drugs often pose significant financial burden to the patient. For example, a regimen of a newer medication called Ocrevus (ocrelizumab) can cost upwards of $65,000 USD annually.
Stem cell therapy—specifically with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)—has shown great potential in the management of multiple sclerosis, which is a disease that is both neurodegenerative and autoimmune (i.e., the body’s immune system turning against itself). Because stem cell therapy can be both immunomodulatory (able to regulate the immune system) and regenerative, it represents an attractive alternative therapy for MS and other conditions characterized by both inflammation and tissue deterioration. Studies have also shown that therapy with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may be able to slow down the progression of MS in patients.

Our two-day protocol centers on the intrathecal transplant of stem cells: a minimum of 120 million cord tissue-derived MSCs (Mesenchymal Stem Cells) are injected directly into the spinal canal. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes, is minimally invasive, and has very little downtime. Patients normally travel home two days following their scheduled appointment.

Our protocol aims to reduce the overall levels of chronic low-grade inflammation in the body. The effects are expected to last for a very long time.
Stem cells are uniquely and intrinsically able to migrate to sites of damage and inflammation in the body. Studies have shown that stem cells are able to orchestrate the repair and regeneration of deteriorated tissues, as well as modulate the immune system, to promote better health.

Depending on the ailment or the patient’s initial condition, the benefits of stem cell therapy can include a reduction in harmful symptoms, the slowing of the progression of the disease, and an overall increase in quality of life.
